Is there any kind of software available that is similar to the type you use to draw up "dream homes" etc, that would be suitable for the layout of interior boat features...then you could play around with placement of features (console placement, seat and livewell locations etc) to see how well they would fit given a certain dimensional constraint?

Was thinking of firing up SketchUp, but is there something more directly applicable to marine?

No, all interior modeling for boats is done in general modelers, sketchup can be used but there is no constrains like on the "home modeler" softwares

I guess there is really not enough of a demand for a specific application like the laying out of features and having constrains to work within. Too bad, for that would really be handy.

I model all major panels in TouchCAD, from hull fairing and lines to frames and bulkheads etc. Since all objects have their own weight properties, I can keep track of weights and center of gravity throughout the design process.

Wow...sounds rather complicated :)

take a look at: xeniagraphics.com – could help even though it is not exactly the tool you are looking for
