Orca 3D

Has anyone tried this plug-in for Rhino?

I downloaded the plug-in and it works fine. I’m still going through the learning curve but it is a nicely done program. My RhinoMarine only works on V3, so I’m looking to upgrade or replace it. I like what I see with Orca3D, as long as a bug doesn’t crawl out and get in my PC. ;-)

I played around with generating waterlines, sections, etc. and am pleased with what I see. Diagonals has a small usability bug, but the developers will fix it soon - it still generates accurate results, but diagonals are had to place where you want them.

Any body else out there trying this RhinoMarine replacement (further product development on RM has been canceled I hear)?

Don't work properly on my computer.
If I use some of the "sliding bars" in Shape (Ship Hull Assistant), surfaces goes crazy.
Any suggestions on how to solve this problem?

Is it true that further product development for Rhinomarine has been canceled?

I would call the boys at Rhino and talk to them directly. I think you will get a straight answer. Better yet, if you can catch them at an exhibition near you, you could talk to them face to face.

Thanks for your response. I believe Rhinomarine is made by Proteus, not Rhino. Is that correct? If so, would the Rhino folks know the status of Proteus' future development plans?

Yes they would, and I have found them to be very straight forward characters. I think they will, at least subtly, direct you to the best option.
Proteus provides a Plug-in to Rhino and has been something of a partner in developing this yacht design software.
My impression is, and I could be way off on this, is that Rhino is tending toward Orca these days. I would feel out and go with the partner they are planning a future with, irrespective of the features available with the two programs.

Yeah... the other thing to keep in mind here is; it is not just the money you spend on the software for the initial purchase (that actually turns out out to be a lesser investment), but the investment in time to learn and become pro efficient with the software. THAT is the real cost.
So looking for software that has a future, is important.

I have used both orca 3d and rhinomarine; and simply i have to say that - " Orca3d is better than rhinomarine"

CET, I was looking at the cost of ORCA 3D, and i have to say maybe you need to have a look at a 3rd option (Rhinomarine, Orca) maybe instead of going for Orca3D you can have a look at Hyss.xls (http://www.hyss.net/index.html) and Seapower, (http://www.sea-power.net/) and weight tracking QWeight (http://www.tenko.no/index.php?option=com_content&view=frontpage&Itemid=1)

I understand is not the most convenient way to go for a hobby/new, there is more work involved and learning for example how to use Hyss.xls, but i think it may be more bang for your buck, again is not the most convenient setup but offers more resistance analysis methods, for example catamarans, sailboats and in regard of stability hyss.xls seems very powerful and can do what Orca3D does and then some more.

Yes is not integrated, yes you are not "one click" away to have results, yes is more than what you may need but it may be cheaper with more options than Orca3D / Rhinomarine

I'm guessing you have time to spend (learning/Practice) and if you are looking maybe to keep on it (designing and messing around boats) no doubt is worth to have a look all the options

I have no idea the cost of seapower and Qweight but i'm just guessing that still will be little or quite a diference to the Pro version of Orca3D.
